The 1970-71 season was a close shave for the Hammers, they finished the season off in 20th position, just surviving from relegation. They stumbled out early in both cup competitions as they lost to Blackpool and Coventry City in the third round of the League and FA Cup. The 1971-72 season saw the Hammers reach the last four of the League cup, only to lose in a semi final replay against Stoke City. They also reached the last sixteen of the FA Cup however Huddersfield defeated them 4-2.
The 1972-73 season was an enjoyable period for any West ham fan, as they embarked on a surprising good campaign in he league, they finished eight positions above what they had achieved the previous season by finishing off in 6th position.
Their finest season of the 1970’s would arguably be considered the 1974-75 campaign. They reached a respectable mid table position at 13th place however they found their form in the FA Cup. They embarked on a legendary run which saw them race into the final to meet Fulham, an all London derby. The Hammers won the tie 2-0 at Wembley and were the FA cup winners of 1975.
